A New Delhi court has accepted the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Sharjeel Imam, who was detained under the Black Act for Prevention of Unlawful Activities in a case related to the riots in the capital in February 2020.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Delhi’s Sakit Court has granted bail in the case registered against him at New Frontier Colony Police Station, but he will remain in custody due to other cases registered against him. An East Delhi court has granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in the case of making a provocative speech at Jamia Millia Islamia. Sharjeel is accused of allegedly making a provocative speech in Jamia during the anti-CAA/NRC protest. He had filed a bail application in connection with this case 31 months ago. The court granted him a bond of Rs. Guaranteed. A court in East Delhi had charged Sharjeel Imam under several serious provisions of the Indian Penal Code including sedition on January 24 this year. These charges against Sharjeel Imam are against the controversial citizenship law in Aligarh Muslim University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. were imposed due to the speeches made.
It should be noted that treason cases were registered against Sharjeel Imam in 5 states including Delhi, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur for his speech in Aligarh Muslim University on 16 January 2020.
