According to another story, on this day Lord Surya Dev himself visits his son Shani Dev at his home. Because of this, this day is known as Makar Sankranti.
A story related to this day also comes from the Mahabharata period. Scholars tell that Pitamah Bhishma ji had waited for Lord Surya Dev to enter Capricorn in order to sacrifice his life. It is believed that the deities who leave their bodies at the time of Uttarayan of the Sun God find a place in the world. Due to which his soul gets freedom from the cycle of 84 lakh births.
Apart from this, a story also tells that on this day Shri Hari Vishnu ji had announced the end of the war by killing all the demons. After this, Shri Hari buried the heads of all the demons under the Mandar mountain. Since then till now this day is also celebrated as the destruction of evil.
A story of this festival is also told from the time of Shri Krishna. It is said that Yashoda, the mother of Shri Krishna, observed a fast for the birth of her son (Shri Krishna). Then Lord Surya ji was enthroned during Uttarayan, and that day was the day of Makar Sankranti. Scholars tell that from the same day the tradition of fasting on this auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti also started.
This day is celebrated with great pomp in India. Most people give charity and dakshina on this day and earn virtue by doing Bhandara etc.
