Pashtun Leader and Poet Gilaman Wazir Dies After Brutal Attack and 72-Hour Coma

Islamabad, Pakistan – Hazrat Naeem, widely recognized as Gilaman Wazir, a prominent leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) and a renowned poet, has tragically passed away at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Islamabad after being in a coma for 72 hours.

PTM’s chief, Manzoor Pashteen, confirmed his death late on Tuesday, expressing profound sorrow and stating that extensive efforts were made to save Gilaman’s life, including consultations with top medical experts globally.

“Despite consulting with leading doctors and hospitals worldwide, including a prominent hospital in the United States, we could not save him,” Pashteen said. “Our local doctors had already given up hope a day earlier, but we sought opinions from the best medical professionals around the globe.”

Pashteen further detailed the severity of the attack on Gilaman, stating, “Our friend was attacked so brutally that recovery became impossible. It is very difficult for me to repeat these words, but Gilaman Wazir is no longer with us.”

According to a PTM statement, Gilaman Wazir’s body will be transported from Islamabad to Bannu via Peshawar and Razmak, North Waziristan, at 6 AM. His funeral is scheduled to take place in his native village of Asad Khel at 4 PM on Friday.

The poet and activist was brought to PIMS Hospital on Sunday evening after being seriously injured in a violent altercation in Islamabad’s B-17 area. An FIR filed with the police indicates that he was attacked in an organized manner by a person named Azad Dawar and his associates.

As of now, no official police statement has been released, nor have any arrests been made in connection with the incident.

On Tuesday, PTM leaders including Manzoor Pashteen and Ali Wazir, along with other activists, stayed at the hospital. Over the past three days, notable figures such as NDM Chairman Mohsin Dawar, former MNA and JUI-F FATA leader Maulana Jamaluddin, Ajmal Wazir, Alamzeb Mehsud, Akhunzada Hussain Khan, Pashtunkhwa National Awami Party Chairman Khushal Kakar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Saif, as well as members of various political parties and social activists, visited the hospital to inquire about his condition.

Gilaman Wazir was an influential member of PTM and was highly celebrated among the youth for his distinctive poetry, which resonated deeply with the Pashtun community.
