NEW DELHI – INDIA presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu on Thursday created history by becoming the India’s first tribal president by defeating opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha.
Azadi Times – he 64-year-old Marmo won by a wide margin against Sinha after getting more than 64 percent correct votes in the counting of MPs and MLAs.
At the end of the counting process, Returning Officer PC Modi declared Murmu as the winner, saying that he won the honor of becoming the 15th President of India by securing 6,76,803 votes against Sinha.
64-year-old Murmu is the country’s first citizen and the first adivasi (tribal) and second woman to become the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
Murmu was elected to the Odisha Assembly for two terms in 2000 and 2004, and served as a minister in Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s BJD-BJP coalition government from 2000 to 2004.
She was sworn in as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand in 2015.
Sinha congratulated her on her victory on Twitter. She wrote, “I along with my fellow countrymen congratulate Shri Draupadi Murmu on her victory in the Presidential Election 2022. i do India hopes that as the 15th President of the Republic of India, she will act as the guardian of the Constitution without fear or favour,”
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed confidence that Draupadi Murmu would be a “brilliant” President.
