Skills vs. Degrees: A Balanced Perspective for the Future of Jammu Kashmir

In recent years, there has been a global shift in the perception of education and skills. Some countries and companies are emphasizing the importance of skills over formal education. This debate is also gaining traction in Jammu Kashmir, where opinions are divided. Some advocate for the traditional degree route, while others highlight the significance of skills based on personal experiences.

Context Matters

First and foremost, it is crucial to understand the context of this discussion. The economic and educational conditions in developing or developed countries differ vastly from those in Pakistan. Both degrees and skills hold their unique value, and the debate isn’t about choosing one over the other but rather integrating both effectively.

The Role of Degrees

Degrees have long been seen as a gateway to better job opportunities and economic stability. However, in Pakistan, only about ten to twelve percent of students manage to obtain a degree. This low percentage raises concerns about the future supply of educated professionals. If we push young students who have just matriculated to immediately acquire skills at the expense of further education, we might face a shortage of educated individuals in the next twenty years.

Education has its time and place. Many students cannot afford to interrupt their studies and later return to complete their degrees. Learning a skill at any point in life is possible, but completing formal education is often a time-sensitive endeavor.

Skills: The Practical Advantage

On the other hand, skills are crucial for immediate job opportunities and practical work experiences. Individuals who couldn’t complete their education for various reasons can significantly benefit from learning skills such as digital marketing, which can lead to better job prospects. For example, digital marketing skills can open doors to freelance opportunities and remote work, which are increasingly relevant in today’s job market.

The Global Perspective

The example of Bill Gates, a college dropout who became one of the world’s richest individuals due to his skills, often surfaces in this debate. However, it’s essential to note that such success stories are rare. In the United States, millions earn degrees each year, while hundreds of thousands drop out. Yet, very few of these dropouts achieve the level of success seen by Bill Gates. Many successful individuals eventually complete their degrees to complement their skills, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach.

Integrating Skills with Education

For Jammu Kashmir to progress, we need educated degree holders who are also skilled. Multinational companies now seek employees who possess both education and practical skills. Therefore, it is vital to prepare our younger generation to pursue academic careers while simultaneously developing relevant skills.

The Role of Technology and Government Initiatives

In today’s digital age, students often spend excessive time on mobile devices and social media, which could be better utilized in skill development. Learning skills such as Excel, PowerPoint, photo editing, video editing, animation, graphic design, web development, computer coding, and blogging can be incredibly beneficial.

The government of Pakistan has recognized this need and organized several free courses available online, such as those offered at digijk.com. These initiatives provide young people with opportunities to enhance their skills alongside their formal education.

Conclusion

The debate between skills and degrees is not about choosing one over the other but finding a harmonious balance. Educated individuals equipped with relevant skills are more likely to succeed in today’s competitive job market. By encouraging our youth to pursue education while developing practical skills, we can pave the way for a brighter future for Jammu Kashmir. Let’s make the best use of our time and resources to ensure that our next generation is well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
