B-complex vitamins are a crucial group of nutrients your body needs to perform various vital functions. These vitamins are found in many foods, making it possible to meet the recommended daily intake through a well-balanced diet. However, individual needs for B vitamins can vary due to factors such as age, pregnancy, dietary habits, medical conditions, genetics, medication use, and alcohol consumption. In some cases, a dietary supplement known as a B-complex vitamin may be necessary to meet these increased demands.

What Are B-Complex Vitamins?

B-complex vitamins encompass all eight B vitamins in a single supplement. These vitamins are water-soluble, meaning the body does not store them and they need to be replenished regularly through diet or supplements. Each B vitamin has unique functions and benefits:

  • B-1 (Thiamine): Converts nutrients into energy; found in sunflower seeds and wheat germ.
  • B-2 (Riboflavin): Converts food into energy and acts as an antioxidant; found in meat and mushrooms.
  • B-3 (Niacin): Supports cellular signaling, metabolism, and DNA repair; found in chicken, tuna, and pulses.
  • B-5 (Pantothenic Acid): Produces energy from food and supports hormone and cholesterol production; found in celery, fish, yogurt, and avocado.
  • B-6 (Pyridoxine): Supports amino acid metabolism, red blood cell production, and neurotransmitter production; found in chickpeas, salmon, and potatoes.
  • B-7 (Biotin): Essential for carbohydrate and fat metabolism and regulates genetic expression; found in yeast, eggs, salmon, cheese, and kale.
  • B-9 (Folate): Needed for cell growth, amino acid metabolism, and blood cell production; found in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified foods.
  • B-12 (Cobalamin): Crucial for neurological function, DNA production, and red blood cell production; found in meat, eggs, seafood, and dairy products.

Who Should Take B-Complex Vitamins?

While most people can obtain sufficient B vitamins through a balanced diet, certain conditions may necessitate additional supplementation:

  • Pregnant or Lactating Women: Increased demand for B12 and folate during fetal growth.
  • Elderly Individuals: Reduced absorption of B-complex vitamins and decreased dietary intake.
  • People with Certain Medical Conditions: Conditions such as celiac disease, cancer, Crohn’s disease, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, and anorexia can increase susceptibility to nutrient deficiencies, including B vitamins.

Health Benefits of B-Complex Vitamins

Even for those without specific deficiencies, B-complex vitamins can offer several health benefits:

  • Reduced Stress and Improved Mood: B-complex vitamins are often used to alleviate fatigue and enhance mood.
  • Potential Reduction in Anxiety and Depression Symptoms: Supplementation may help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Conclusion

Ensuring an adequate intake of B-complex vitamins is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. Whether through diet or supplementation, these vitamins play a vital role in energy production, metabolism, and the functioning of various body systems. For individuals with increased needs or certain health conditions, B-complex supplements can provide the necessary boost to maintain optimal health.

Kashmiris to observe Right to Self-Determination Day tommorrow

0

SRINAGAR: (Azadi Times Newspaper) 04 January 2023 Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and around the world are celebrating Self-Determination Day tomorrow with the aim of putting pressure on the international community to fulfill its commitments to Kashmiris. Azadi Times Newspaper reported….,

Self-Determination Day will be celebrated on the call of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference. Protests, rallies, and seminars will be held in both parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan and across the world to sensitize the international community on the sensitivity of the Kashmir conflict.

It was on 5th January 1949 that the United Nations Security Council passed a historic resolution that stated that the question of the accession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan should be decided by the democratic method of the free and impartial referendum.

Naeem Ahmad Khan and Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar, the leaders of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, said in their statements in Srinagar that the resolution of January 5, 1949, is clear proof that Kashmir is not an internal matter of India but recognized at the international level.

It is a disputed area. He urged the United Nations to fulfill its responsibility to resolve the Kashmir conflict in its historical context. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the senior leader of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, in a statement issued in Srinagar, resolved the Kashmir conflict through negotiations.

Indian troops along with paramilitary personnel and so-called Rural Defense Committee members continued the siege and search operations in the Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Riasi districts of the Jammu region.

The Indian authorities have imposed a night curfew along the working camp in the Samba district. The Indian Army Tribunal rejected the bail of Indian Army Captain Bhupinder, who martyred three laborers from the Rajouri district in a fake encounter.

This action of the tribunal has confirmed that Indian soldiers are extrajudicially killing innocent Kashmiri youth. A team of the Indian Army under the leadership of Captain Bhupinder killed these laborers on July 18, 2020, in Shopian. He was martyred in the Amshipora area.

Editorial: The Unfulfilled Promise of Kashmir’s Right to Self-Determination

UN Resolution on Kashmir, January 5, 1949
UN Resolution on Kashmir, January 5, 1949

For 74 years, Kashmiris around the world have observed January 5 as Self-Determination Day, a solemn reminder of their enduring struggle for autonomy. This date marks the passage of a United Nations resolution that promised the people of Jammu and Kashmir the right to determine their own future through a free and impartial referendum. However, despite the passage of time, this promise remains unfulfilled, and the region continues to be a flashpoint for conflict between India and Pakistan.

The resolution, adopted on January 5, 1949, outlined a clear process for resolving the dispute. It stipulated that the question of Kashmir’s accession to India or Pakistan would be decided by a democratic vote under the supervision of a UN-nominated moderator. This resolution was intended to bring peace and stability to the region following the first Indo-Pakistani war. Pakistan showed willingness to comply with these terms, but India’s stance shifted, prioritizing military occupation over diplomatic resolution.

India’s refusal to withdraw its troops and create conditions conducive to a referendum has been the crux of the problem. This intransigence has led to decades of strife, casting a long shadow over South Asia. The UN’s resolutions on Kashmir, while advisory, were meant to provide a pathway to peace. Yet, they have been ignored, with India’s actions making a mockery of the international community’s efforts.

The situation took a dramatic turn on August 5, 2019, when India abrogated Article 370, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. This move, seen by many as an attempt to further integrate the region into India, has only deepened the alienation and resentment among Kashmiris. Despite a severe military lockdown and efforts to suppress dissent, the spirit of resistance among the Kashmiri people remains unbroken. They continue to demand their right to self-determination, often at great personal cost.

The United Nations, which has been proactive in implementing resolutions in other conflict zones, has largely turned a blind eye to Kashmir. This selective intervention undermines the credibility of the international body and exposes its susceptibility to the influence of powerful member states like the United States. It is imperative that the UN re-engage with the Kashmir issue, not just for the sake of regional stability, but also to uphold the principles of justice and self-determination that it purports to champion.

The failure to resolve the Kashmir issue is not just a bilateral problem between India and Pakistan; it is a matter of international concern. Both nations are nuclear powers, and any escalation of the conflict could have catastrophic consequences. The UN must facilitate a fair and impartial referendum, allowing Kashmiris to decide their own fate. This step is crucial not only for peace in South Asia but also for the credibility of international law and institutions.

Kashmir remains a tinderbox, and ignoring its unresolved status is a dangerous gamble. The international community, led by the UN, must act decisively to ensure that the promises made to the people of Kashmir are finally honored. The time for half-measures and rhetorical commitments is over; what is needed now is concrete action to bring about a just and lasting resolution to this long-standing conflict.

Editorial: Media Integrity and the Urgent Need for Fair Representation

0

The media, often heralded as the fourth pillar of the state, plays a pivotal role in shaping societal discourse and holding authorities accountable. However, in Pakistan, the media landscape is marred by distortions and omissions, particularly in its portrayal of critical issues.

Despite its potential for societal betterment, the electronic media, in particular, has veered off course, prioritizing ratings over journalistic principles. This relentless pursuit of viewership has led to a proliferation of sensationalized content, permeating households with obscenity and indecency. The erosion of moral values within media programming has reached such heights that families find it increasingly challenging to engage in shared television viewing, exacerbating existing social divisions.

Furthermore, the media’s silence on pressing issues in regions like Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan is deafening. These areas, rich in natural resources and strategic significance, are overlooked, their problems brushed aside as if they do not exist. Gilgit-Baltistan, in particular, stands at the crossroads of geopolitical interests, yet its plight remains largely ignored by mainstream media.

The bureaucratic mishandling of Gilgit-Baltistan mirrors the injustices witnessed in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Despite Pakistan’s vocal stance on Kashmir, bureaucratic negligence and disregard for legal norms prevail, perpetuating discontent among the region’s populace. While the international community acknowledges the legal status of Gilgit-Baltistan, the media’s silence allows for continued violations of basic rights and freedoms.

The media’s failure to report on these issues not only undermines Pakistan’s interests but also enables foreign narratives to dominate the discourse. Indian media, in particular, exploits social media content to propagate its agenda, amplifying grievances that go unaddressed by Pakistani media outlets.

It is imperative for Pakistani media to reclaim its integrity and fulfill its societal responsibilities. Rather than succumbing to sensationalism, media outlets must prioritize truth and fairness, amplifying marginalized voices and shedding light on social injustices. Moreover, there is an urgent need for increased scrutiny of bureaucratic actions in sensitive regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, ensuring they align with Pakistan’s principles and interests.

In conclusion, the media must uphold its duty to society by fostering transparency, accountability, and fair representation. Only through an unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity can the media fulfill its role as a pillar of democracy and contribute meaningfully to Pakistan’s progress.

Skills vs. Degrees: A Balanced Perspective for the Future of Jammu Kashmir

In recent years, there has been a global shift in the perception of education and skills. Some countries and companies are emphasizing the importance of skills over formal education. This debate is also gaining traction in Jammu Kashmir, where opinions are divided. Some advocate for the traditional degree route, while others highlight the significance of skills based on personal experiences.

Context Matters

First and foremost, it is crucial to understand the context of this discussion. The economic and educational conditions in developing or developed countries differ vastly from those in Pakistan. Both degrees and skills hold their unique value, and the debate isn’t about choosing one over the other but rather integrating both effectively.

The Role of Degrees

Degrees have long been seen as a gateway to better job opportunities and economic stability. However, in Pakistan, only about ten to twelve percent of students manage to obtain a degree. This low percentage raises concerns about the future supply of educated professionals. If we push young students who have just matriculated to immediately acquire skills at the expense of further education, we might face a shortage of educated individuals in the next twenty years.

Education has its time and place. Many students cannot afford to interrupt their studies and later return to complete their degrees. Learning a skill at any point in life is possible, but completing formal education is often a time-sensitive endeavor.

Skills: The Practical Advantage

On the other hand, skills are crucial for immediate job opportunities and practical work experiences. Individuals who couldn’t complete their education for various reasons can significantly benefit from learning skills such as digital marketing, which can lead to better job prospects. For example, digital marketing skills can open doors to freelance opportunities and remote work, which are increasingly relevant in today’s job market.

The Global Perspective

The example of Bill Gates, a college dropout who became one of the world’s richest individuals due to his skills, often surfaces in this debate. However, it’s essential to note that such success stories are rare. In the United States, millions earn degrees each year, while hundreds of thousands drop out. Yet, very few of these dropouts achieve the level of success seen by Bill Gates. Many successful individuals eventually complete their degrees to complement their skills, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach.

Integrating Skills with Education

For Jammu Kashmir to progress, we need educated degree holders who are also skilled. Multinational companies now seek employees who possess both education and practical skills. Therefore, it is vital to prepare our younger generation to pursue academic careers while simultaneously developing relevant skills.

The Role of Technology and Government Initiatives

In today’s digital age, students often spend excessive time on mobile devices and social media, which could be better utilized in skill development. Learning skills such as Excel, PowerPoint, photo editing, video editing, animation, graphic design, web development, computer coding, and blogging can be incredibly beneficial.

The government of Pakistan has recognized this need and organized several free courses available online, such as those offered at digijk.com. These initiatives provide young people with opportunities to enhance their skills alongside their formal education.

Conclusion

The debate between skills and degrees is not about choosing one over the other but finding a harmonious balance. Educated individuals equipped with relevant skills are more likely to succeed in today’s competitive job market. By encouraging our youth to pursue education while developing practical skills, we can pave the way for a brighter future for Jammu Kashmir. Let’s make the best use of our time and resources to ensure that our next generation is well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Are Smartphones Making You Sick? New Study Highlights the Importance of Device Hygiene

If you often find yourself catching colds or other common seasonal illnesses, your smartphone might be part of the problem. A new study from the United Arab Emirates has revealed that ensuring the cleanliness of smartphones and smartwatches can significantly improve your health.

The Study’s Findings

The joint study, conducted by the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences and Bond University in Australia, focused on the link between device hygiene and health. Researchers discovered that while hand hygiene is crucial, it loses its effectiveness if smartphones and other personal devices are not cleaned regularly.

Why Smartphones Harbor Germs

Smartphones, with their touch screens and constant proximity to their users, provide an ideal environment for the growth of disease-causing germs. The warm temperatures and frequent handling contribute to this problem. Since our phones accompany us everywhere, from public places to our homes, they can become a major vector for transferring germs.

Methodology

The study involved staff members from a medical center, examining samples from their mobile phones and smartwatches. Metagenomics sequencing technology was used to analyze the germs present on their hands as well as their devices. The results were striking: the same germs found on hands were also present on phones and watches, including some that could resist drugs and even traces of the coronavirus.

Health Implications

The presence of these germs on device screens poses a significant health threat. However, the researchers emphasized that regular cleaning of mobile phones can mitigate this risk. They suggest incorporating smartphone cleaning into daily routines, much like handwashing.

Recommendations for Device Hygiene

Experts recommend the following tips to keep your devices germ-free:

  1. Regular Cleaning: Make it a habit to clean your smartphone and smartwatch daily.
  2. Use Sanitization Wipes: Opt for sanitization wipes specifically designed for electronic devices to avoid damaging the screens.
  3. Avoid Cleaning While Charging: Refrain from cleaning your phone when it is connected to a charger to prevent electrical hazards.

By following these guidelines, you can reduce the risk of transferring germs from your devices to your hands and ultimately to your body.

Conclusion

As we become increasingly dependent on our smartphones and smartwatches, it is essential to consider their cleanliness as part of our health routine. Ensuring that our devices are as clean as our hands can go a long way in protecting us from common illnesses and maintaining overall well-being.

Incorporate these simple yet effective practices into your daily life to keep the germs at bay and safeguard your health.

Windows is the most widely used computer operating system in the world, yet many users are unaware of the numerous hidden features it offers.

One such feature is the ability to create a secret folder on the desktop that is almost invisible to others. This can be particularly useful for keeping personal files away from prying eyes, such as curious children. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create an invisible folder on your Windows desktop.

Step 1: Create a New Folder

  1. Right-Click on the Desktop: Anywhere on the desktop, right-click to bring up the context menu.
  2. Select New: Hover over the ‘New’ option.
  3. Choose Folder: Click on ‘Folder’ to create a new folder on your desktop.

Step 2: Remove the Folder Name

  1. Right-Click the New Folder: Once the folder is created, right-click on it.

  3. Navigate to Customize Tab: In the Properties window, go to the ‘Customize’ tab.
  4. Change Icon: Click on the ‘Change Icon’ button located at the bottom of the window.
  5. Select a Blank Icon: Scroll through the available icons until you find the blank icons (there are usually four of them). Select any blank icon and click ‘OK’.
  6. Apply Changes: Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ to save your changes.

Result: Your Invisible Folder

Your folder should now be virtually invisible on the desktop. The only way to find it is by hovering the mouse over the area where it was created or by selecting that section of the desktop. This hidden folder can be an effective way to prevent unauthorized access to personal files.

Tips for Better Implementation

  • Use a Full-Size Keyboard: It is recommended to use a keyboard with a numeric keypad (Numpad) for entering the Alt code.
  • Remember the Location: Since the folder is invisible, it’s important to remember its location on your desktop to easily access it later.
  • Regular Backup: Keep a regular backup of the files stored in the invisible folder to prevent accidental loss.

By following these simple steps, you can create a discreet, nameless folder that blends seamlessly into your desktop background, enhancing the security and privacy of you
