Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC)
Overview
Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) is a grassroots coalition operating in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Azad Jammu & Kashmir). Founded in 2022, it includes members from trade unions, civil society, student groups, lawyers, and transporters, advocating for economic and governance reforms.
History
JKJAAC rose to prominence during the 2024 mass protests in Azad Kashmir. These protests were fueled by rising inflation and poor governance, culminating in a six-day region-wide movement. As a result, the government granted a Rs. 23 billion subsidy and announced a judicial commission.
Objectives
- Demand fair electricity pricing based on local hydropower production.
- Restore subsidies on essential commodities like wheat.
- Ensure transparency and accountability in government functions.
- Strengthen grassroots democracy through inclusive policy making.
Leadership
- Shaukat Nawaz Mir – Chairman
- Sardar Umar Nazir – Core Member
- Imtiaz Aslam – Senior Leader
- Hafeez Hamdani – Spokesperson
Major Activities
In May 2024, the committee coordinated peaceful demonstrations across the region. These efforts led to major government concessions including utility price reductions, financial aid, and official privilege audits.
Controversies
While JKJAAC claims a non-political and independent identity, some officials accuse it of disrupting law and order. Committee leaders deny any unlawful activity and maintain their focus is on public welfare and justice.
