Maqbool Bhat

Maqbool Bhat popularly knows as Maqbool Butt Shaheed, is regarded as the The First Martyr. Maqbool Bhat was the face of Kashmir’s unyielding demand for self-determination. He rejected Indian and Pakistani dominance, co-founding the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in 1976 to champion an independent, secular Jammu Kashmir. Arrested in 1966 for anti-India activities, he escaped imprisonment in 1968, emerging as a symbol of defiance. Convicted controversially for killing an Indian officer, he was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984. Denied burial in his homeland, his body remains confined mirroring Kashmir’s stifled aspirations. Bhat’s legacy thrives as a unifying force. In Indian-administered Kashmir, murals and slogans like “Maqbool Hamara Zinda Hai” (Our Maqbool Lives) defy post-2019 repression, while protest songs immortalize his sacrifice. In Pakistani-administered Kashmir, he bridges divides, symbolizing shared resistance. Globally, the diaspora marks his death anniversary, demanding repatriation of his remains as a reckoning with history. Decades on, Bhat’s vision of azadi (freedom) endures a testament to Kashmir’s unresolved struggle. A martyr who rejected compromise, his critique of foreign interference and call for Kashmiri agency remain eerily relevant, inspiring generations to reclaim their narrative.
