Bodies of Two Victims Recovered Nearly 20 Years After the Devastating 2005 Kashmir Earthquake

Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu Kashmir: The bodies of two individuals were recovered nearly 20 years after the catastrophic 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Muzaffarabad on October 8, 2005. The discovery was made during excavation work at the site of a massive landslide in the Plate area of Muzaffarabad.

The recovery was made as workers cleared debris from a collapsed building that had been buried under a landslide triggered by the earthquake. According to local councilor Mahmood Beg, the building housed several students who were tragically trapped under the rubble when the earthquake struck. The identities of the recovered bodies are yet to be confirmed, and DNA testing will be conducted to hand over the remains to their families.

District administration officials have stated that there is a possibility of finding more bodies as excavation continues. As a precautionary measure, the digging has been temporarily halted to ensure a systematic and respectful recovery process.

Yasser Josh, a representative from the Disaster Management and Red Crescent Society, revealed that the Red Cross had buried numerous victims at this site in the aftermath of the earthquake. The recovery of these bodies has reopened old wounds for many residents who lost loved ones in the disaster.

The 2005 earthquake, which lasted only a few seconds, left a trail of destruction across Azad Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It claimed an estimated 88,000 lives, displaced over 3 million people, and reduced entire towns to rubble. The disaster remains one of the most devastating in the region’s history, with communities still grappling with its long-term impact.

As the 20th anniversary of the earthquake approaches, the recovery of these bodies serves as a somber reminder of the lives lost and the resilience of the survivors. The local community has expressed mixed emotions, with many calling for continued efforts to locate and honor the remaining victims.

Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as the excavation process continues, emphasizing the importance of handling the remains with dignity and respect.

Teenager Miraculously Rescued After Vehicle Plunges 200 Feet into Icy River in Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley, Azad Jammu Kashmir: In a daring and heart-stopping rescue operation, a 16-year-old boy was miraculously saved after the vehicle he was traveling in plunged nearly 200 feet into a freezing river in the picturesque yet perilous Neelum Valley. The incident, which occurred earlier today, has been hailed as one of the most dangerous and successful rescue missions in recent memory.

The teenager, identified as Usman, son of Anwar, was traveling in a vehicle that lost control and fell into the icy waters of the Neelum River. The vehicle reportedly tumbled down a steep slope before coming to rest in the freezing river, trapping Usman under debris and snow. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the vehicle partially submerged and surrounded by icy water and snow.

Local rescue teams, known for their bravery and expertise in handling such treacherous conditions, immediately sprang into action. Despite the freezing temperatures and the risk of avalanches, the teams worked tirelessly for over half an hour to locate and extract Usman from the wreckage. Using specialized equipment and sheer determination, they managed to pull the teenager to safety, much to the relief of onlookers and family members.

Usman, who was conscious but visibly shaken, was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Doctors confirmed that he sustained minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The rescue operation has been widely praised, with locals and officials commending the bravery and skill of the rescue teams. “This was one of the most challenging rescues we have ever undertaken,” said a member of the rescue team. “The conditions were extremely dangerous, but we knew we had to act quickly to save a life.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of traveling in the mountainous regions of Neelum Valley, especially during the winter months when icy roads and avalanches pose significant risks. Authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines while navigating the area.

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, many are calling this rescue a miracle and a testament to the power of faith and human resilience. “Allah has blessed us with this miracle,” said a local resident. “We are grateful to the rescue teams and pray for Usman’s speedy recovery.”

The story of Usman’s rescue has captured the hearts of people across the region, with many taking to social media to express their gratitude and admiration for the rescue teams. As the community comes together to celebrate this miraculous survival, the bravery and dedication of the rescuers will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.

Pakistan International Airlines to Launch Skardu-Dubai Flights from March 31 Amid Tourism Push

Skardu, Gilgit Baltistan: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced new international and domestic flight services, including routes connecting Skardu a city in the Pakistan’s administered Kashmir’s Gilgit-Baltistan region with Dubai, Lahore, and Karachi.

The move is framed as part of efforts to boost tourism infrastructure in the mountainous area, which is administered by Pakistan but claimed by J&K as part of the broader Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

According to the schedule, direct flights between Skardu and Dubai will commence on 31 March 2025, operating weekly on Mondays and Fridays. Domestic connections include Skardu-Lahore flights on Mondays and Wednesdays and Skardu-Karachi services starting 2 April 2025, running on Mondays and Saturdays.

The initiative aims to promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region known for its dramatic landscapes, including access to K2 and winter destinations. Pakistani authorities stated the flights align with plans to develop tourism on “modern lines,” though the region’s political status remains internationally contested.

Tourism stakeholders welcomed the connectivity but urged PIA to expand operations into winter. A local industry representative said, “Baltistan has untapped potential for winter tourism, but flights are currently limited to summer. Year-round schedules could boost cold-weather travel.”

The flights are expected to ease travel for tourists and strengthen links between cities administered by Pakistan and global hubs like Dubai. Gilgit-Baltistan’s status remains unresolved under international law, with India and Pakistan both asserting claims over the territory as part of the larger Kashmir conflict.

PIA has not commented on expanding winter services or the geopolitical implications of operating flights in the disputed region.

Proposal to Increase Salaries of Azad Kashmir Assembly Members to Match Punjab Assembly

Muzaffarabad: Chaudhry Basharat, Secretary of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Assembly Committee, has proposed increasing the salaries of the Speaker, ministers, and members of the AJK Assembly to match those of the Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly. In his proposal, Chaudhry Basharat stated that an additional budget of Rs. 45 crore, 38 lakh, and 40 thousand would be required to implement this change.

According to the proposal, the salaries and allowances of AJK (Pakistani administered Kashmir) Legislative Assembly members were last increased in 2014, when the basic salary of an assembly member was Rs. 45,000. In today’s era of inflation, this amount is considered extremely insufficient.

Chaudhry Basharat highlighted that the salaries of members of the National Assembly, Senate, and Punjab Provincial Assembly in Pakistan have recently been increased in line with inflation. Since the AJK Assembly is considered equal in status to the Punjab Assembly, the salaries of AJK Assembly members should also be brought on par with those of Punjab Assembly members.

The proposal outlines that in Punjab, the salary of an assembly member has been increased from Rs. 76,000 to Rs. 400,000, while the salary of ministers has been raised from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 900,000. Similarly, the Speaker’s salary has been increased from Rs. 125,000 to Rs. 950,000.

Additionally, the Deputy Speaker’s salary has been raised from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 775,000. Salaries of advisors, special assistants, and parliamentary secretaries have also been adjusted accordingly. Chaudhry Basharat emphasized that since the AJK Assembly holds equal status to the Punjab Assembly, the salaries of AJK Assembly members should be increased to match those of Punjab Assembly members.

Sources indicate that the matter will be presented in the next cabinet meeting. Once approved by the cabinet, it will be tabled in the AJK Assembly for further discussion and implementation.

International Women’s Day: A Tribute to the Women of Jammu and Kashmir

March 8 is celebrated globally as International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of women. Across the world, people with diverse perspectives and ideologies write articles, organize programs, and deliver speeches, focusing on women and their rights.

It is evident that women are one of Allah’s most profound creations. Reflecting on their existence helps us understand the essence of humanity. In recent years, the slogan “My body, my choice” has sparked widespread debate. While some criticize it, others support it. However, if we look beyond this slogan, we realize that a woman’s physical and emotional structure is a source of peace and security. The comfort a child finds in a mother’s embrace is unparalleled. Similarly, places of worship—mosques, churches, and temples—are considered sanctuaries of peace, much like the role women play in society.

Allah has placed paradise under the feet of mothers and made women the means of human creation. Women are often compared to various divine attributes, yet their rights remain a contentious issue. Numerous organizations advocate for women’s rights, but the question remains: What rights are women truly demanding?

In my view, the most fundamental right women seek today is the right to live. Every human being deserves the right to breathe freely and live without fear. Women are not asking for anything extraordinary—they simply demand the oxygen Allah has provided for all. Yet, society often restricts this basic right, forcing women to seek permission for every step they take.

Society, which is essentially a collection of individuals, often fails to treat women as equals. Islam, a revolutionary and miraculous religion, has granted women rights that are often denied in practice, whether in inheritance or decision-making. The fault lies not with Islam but with those who claim to be its champions while perpetuating inequality.

In our society, two dominant ideologies exist: one represented by figures like Marvi Sarmad and the other by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar. Both, in my opinion, are imperialistic and do not truly represent the working-class woman or the essence of religion. These ideologies have pitted women against each other, causing harm to society. The solution lies in understanding these imperialistic tactics and resisting exploitative forces through intellectual, ideological, and political means.

Now, turning to Jammu and Kashmir, the women of this region have shown unparalleled resilience and courage over the past 78 years. They have followed in the footsteps of Hazrat Khadija (RA), the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who stood by him with unwavering loyalty. The women of Jammu and Kashmir have faced immense challenges, yet they continue to fight for their rights and the freedom of their land.

In the ongoing resistance movement of Jammu and Kashmir, women like Tahira Toqeer, the Women’s Secretary of JKLF for Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, have emerged as front-line leaders. Born in Jalalpur Jattan, Punjab, Tahira Toqeer moved to Kotli after her marriage to Dr. Toqeer. Despite having studied a distorted version of history in Pakistan, she became a symbol of resistance in the struggle for Jammu and Kashmir’s freedom. Over the past decade, she has traveled to every corner of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, rallying for the cause of independence.

Alongside Tahira Toqeer, countless other women have played pivotal roles in the resistance movement. From Shabila Qasim and Zara Ijaz to Abida Rathore, Nazia Shah Advocate, Nasreen Malik, Rabia Muzaffar, Fatima Mir, Saima Mirza from the UK, Ifra Shabbir from Kotli, Adeeba Jamil from Hajira, Nusrat Qureshi, Maria Shahzad, and Komal Raja—these women represent the 53% female population of Jammu and Kashmir. They have sacrificed their dreams, suppressed their desires, and dedicated their lives to the struggle for a dignified, prosperous, and independent Jammu and Kashmir.

On this International Women’s Day, we must celebrate women not just as symbols of resilience but as active resistance fighters. The struggle for the freedom of Jammu and Kashmir will only succeed when the entire nation, including its women, stands united against occupation. Women are and will remain the backbone of this movement.

Today, we salute the unwavering struggle, courage, bravery, and determination of the women of Jammu and Kashmir. For the past 78 years, they have sacrificed their lives, dreams, and aspirations for the cause of freedom. They have given birth to a generation committed to the struggle for a free and sovereign Jammu and Kashmir.

Students of University of Azad Kashmir Issue 12-Point Charter of Demands

Muzaffarabad: Students of the University of Azad Jammu Kashmir have presented a 12-point charter of demands to the administration, calling for legal action against those responsible for violence against students, the withdrawal of registered FIRs, and the establishment of a judicial commission, among other key demands.

The students have warned the administration that if their demands are not met by Monday, they will shut down educational institutions across Azad Kashmir and launch a protest movement.

According to a statement issued after a student assembly, the primary demand is for immediate legal action against those responsible for the violence against students at the university. The students emphasized that this issue cannot be ignored, and if justice is not served, protests will be inevitable.

Another significant demand in the charter is the withdrawal of FIRs filed against students. The students argue that innocent students are being harassed through false cases, which is unacceptable. In this regard, they have also demanded the formation of a judicial commission headed by the bar council and judiciary to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into the incidents at the university.

Additionally, the students have called for the establishment of an anti-harassment cell at the university to effectively address such issues and ensure a safe educational environment.

The students have made it clear that if their demands are not met by Monday, they will shut down all educational institutions across Azad Kashmir and initiate protests, holding the university administration fully responsible for the consequences.

This development highlights the growing unrest among students and their determination to fight for their rights and justice.

Students Protest Against Fee Hike at University of Kashmir, Clash with Police; Several Injured

Muzaffarabad, March 7, 2025 – Students at the University of Kashmir staged a protest against a recent fee hike, leading to violent clashes with police at the university’s main gate. The confrontation resulted in multiple injuries as police resorted to baton charges and tear gas shelling to disperse the demonstrators. Female students and university staff were reportedly trapped inside the building during the chaos.

According to reports from Domail Digital, the protest began when students gathered to oppose the fee increase. Tensions escalated at the university’s central gate, where students and police clashed. Protesters allegedly threw stones at the police, who responded with baton charges and tear gas, leaving several students injured. Some students were also arrested during the crackdown.

The students had blocked the university gate as part of their protest against the fee hike. However, the university administration called in the police, who detained several protesters. The main gate of the university turned into a battleground as the situation spiraled out of control. The protest was sparked two days earlier when students were reportedly pressured over fee-related issues, prompting them to take to the streets.

The protesting students condemned the university administration for calling in the police and allowing violence against them, calling it “unacceptable under any circumstances.” They demanded an immediate rollback of the fee hike and accountability for the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with concerns rising over the handling of student protests and the broader issue of rising educational costs in the region. Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.

European Support for Ukraine: A New Peace Plan Emerges Amidst Tensions

In a significant show of solidarity, European leaders, led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have announced a unified stance in support of Ukraine’s defense and have proposed a European peace plan as an alternative to the American-led initiative. Dubbed the “Starmer-Macron Plan,” the details of this proposal are yet to be fully disclosed. However, the London summit highlighted two key priorities: ensuring Ukraine’s security and emphasizing that any peace plan must be implemented in collaboration with the United States.

Prime Minister Starmer, addressing leaders from across Europe, declared that this is a decisive moment for Europe’s security. “This is not the time for words but for action,” he stated. During the summit, Starmer also announced a £1.6 billion aid package to Ukraine for missile procurement, underscoring Europe’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

European leaders agreed to increase defense spending, sending a clear message to the U.S. that Europe is capable of defending itself. However, they also stressed the importance of American support and cooperation on security matters.

Russia’s Stance and the Growing Divide

Meanwhile, Moscow has expressed satisfaction over the growing rift between the U.S. and Europe regarding Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia’s military operations in Ukraine will continue until all objectives are achieved. “A peace plan for Ukraine is not on our agenda at the moment,” he said, adding that the Western alliance appears increasingly fragmented, with disagreements becoming more visible.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has noted a shift in the U.S. position on the Ukrainian war since President Donald Trump took office. Unlike his predecessor, President Joe Biden, Trump has not been supportive of isolating Russia. Instead, he has sought to end the war on terms favorable to Russia, including maintaining control over 20% of Ukrainian territory captured during the three-year conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently maintained that peace cannot be achieved until Russia withdraws from occupied Ukrainian territories. However, recent developments suggest that this demand may remain unmet.

Tensions Between Trump and Zelenskyy

The strained relationship between President Trump and President Zelenskyy became evident during a recent meeting at the White House. Trump reportedly pressured Zelenskyy to accept a peace deal on Russian terms, which the Ukrainian leader rejected, calling Russia an aggressor and Putin a murderer of his own people. This led to a heated exchange, with Trump and Vice President Vance expressing frustration and warning Zelenskyy that Ukraine cannot dictate terms without American support.

The meeting ended abruptly, with Zelenskyy leaving the White House without signing a proposed minerals agreement. The joint press conference was also canceled, and Trump later stated that Zelenskyy is not yet ready for peace but is welcome to return when he is.

European Reaction and the Starmer-Macron Plan

The treatment of Zelenskyy at the White House sparked strong reactions across Europe, with many viewing it as a blow to democratic values and Ukraine’s sovereignty. European leaders reiterated their support for Ukraine, vowing not to abandon the country in its fight against Russian aggression.

At the London summit, Prime Minister Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled their joint peace proposal, which includes strengthening Ukraine’s defense, providing European security guarantees, and securing American support to ensure Russia adheres to any agreed-upon peace terms. While the full details of the plan remain undisclosed, Macron hinted at a three-month interim ceasefire agreement, monitored by a credible European peacekeeping force, with U.S. support for aerial and intelligence surveillance.

Starmer and Macron plan to discuss these proposals with President Trump, aiming to convince him to support a unified approach. However, Trump has already rejected their earlier request for continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Europe’s Strategic Shift

The London conference marked a notable shift in Europe’s stance. While European leaders remain committed to supporting Ukraine, they are increasingly focused on ending the war rather than pursuing Russia’s defeat. This contrasts with previous demands for Russia’s complete withdrawal from Ukrainian territories.

The summit also highlighted Europe’s recognition of the need to stand independently on security matters. European Union leaders are expected to announce a new aid package for Ukraine this week, emphasizing that Europe cannot afford Ukraine’s complete defeat, as it would pose a severe threat to continental security.

The Road Ahead

The Starmer-Macron Plan represents a pragmatic approach to ending the conflict, balancing Ukraine’s security needs with the realities of geopolitical dynamics. While the proposal aims to involve Europe as a key player in peace negotiations, it also acknowledges the necessity of American and Russian cooperation.

For Ukraine, the situation presents a challenging dilemma. President Zelenskyy, while reiterating his commitment to reclaiming occupied territories, has little choice but to align with European proposals to avoid losing critical support.

As the war enters its fourth year, the international community watches closely to see whether the Starmer-Macron Plan can bridge the gap between American and European priorities and pave the way for a sustainable peace. However, the deep-rooted rivalry between the U.S. and Russia, spanning decades, suggests that any long-term partnership remains unlikely.

For now, President Trump’s pragmatic approach appears to be yielding results, as he positions himself as a mediator capable of offering Russia a dignified return to the global stage. The question remains: what price will Trump demand for this concession, and how will it shape the future of U.S.-Russia relations?
