Indian Police Arrest Alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba Operative Linked to Poster Campaign as Security Scrutiny Intensifies in India-administered Kashmir

Date:

Srinagar — India’s Delhi Police Special Cell has claimed the arrest of an alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative from the Ghazipur area, identifying the individual as Shabir Ahmad Lone, a resident of Kangan in the Gandarbal district of India-administered Kashmir.

According to officials, the arrest is linked to an investigation involving the appearance of alleged “anti-state” posters in parts of the Indian capital’s metro system. Police say the suspect was part of a recently uncovered module allegedly connected to the banned organization.

Addressing a press conference, Additional Commissioner of Police Pramod Kushwaha stated that Lone was detained overnight in connection with the case. Authorities claim the network had already led to the arrest of eight individuals prior to Lone’s detention.

Officials reported that 2,300 Bangladeshi Taka, 5,000 Pakistani currency notes, and 3,000 Indian rupees were recovered from the suspect’s possession. Police allege the accused was operating as a “sleeper cell” member tasked with placing posters and conducting reconnaissance activities at various locations.

Investigators allege that Lone was in contact with two handlers and had shared photographs and videos of potential locations with individuals outside India. Authorities further claim he had established operational connections in West Bengal and had traveled to Delhi for recruitment purposes.

According to police statements, seven of the previously arrested suspects are Bangladeshi nationals, while one is an Indian citizen. Officials say the module was receiving instructions linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and had identified commercial areas as potential targets.

Police also claim that Lone contracted a second marriage in Bangladesh in order to integrate locally and avoid detection, though these claims remain part of an ongoing investigation and have not yet been tested in court.

Authorities clarified that no confirmed link has yet been established between the suspect and any Delhi bombing case, adding that further interrogation is ongoing.

Previous Arrest and Background

Security officials stated that Lone had previously been arrested in 2007 by the Special Cell, when authorities reportedly recovered weapons including an AK-47 rifle and grenades. According to officials, he remained imprisoned in Tihar Jail until 2018.

Investigators allege that during the earlier case, Lone had direct links with Jamaat-ud-Dawa leadership, including Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. These claims, however, remain part of police records and have not been independently verified in the present case proceedings.

The arrest comes amid continued heightened security scrutiny involving individuals from India-administered Kashmir across major Indian cities. Analysts note that allegations related to militancy frequently intersect with broader political tensions surrounding the disputed Himalayan region.

Human rights observers have long called for transparent investigations and due process protections, particularly in cases involving individuals from conflict-affected regions. Legal experts emphasize that allegations made during police investigations require judicial scrutiny before conclusions can be drawn.

The political sensitivity of Kashmir — divided between India-administered Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with adjoining regions such as Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Aksai Chin (Raksai China) — continues to influence security discourse in South Asia.

Observers say such cases often shape narratives about regional stability, militancy, and civil liberties, highlighting the importance of independent verification and responsible reporting.

Delhi Police officials say they intend to seek further custody of the suspect for continued questioning. Authorities indicate that additional details regarding the alleged network may emerge during the course of the investigation.

No formal court verdict has yet been issued in the case, and the claims remain under investigation.
