Venezuelan Ex-President Maduro and Wife Convey Resilience from U.S. Detention

Date:

The ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have issued a rare message on social media, affirming that they remain “steady and calm” while in detention by U.S. forces. According to the French news agency AFP, the couple has been held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center for almost three months.

In their statement, shared from Maduro’s former social media account, they said: “We are fine, strong, calm, and continually in prayers.”

It remains unclear who exactly posted the message on their behalf.

Maduro and his wife expressed gratitude for messages of support from global well-wishers. “Every word of love, every act of sympathy, and every expression of support uplifts our spirit and strengthens us spiritually,” the statement read.

Sources revealed that Maduro has been reading the Bible while in detention, and some inmates refer to him respectfully as “the President.” His communication is tightly controlled: phone calls to family and legal counsel are limited to 15 minutes per call.

Family Updates and Daily Life

Maduro’s son, Nicolásito, confirmed that his father is physically well, calm, and exercising regularly in detention. The former president has described himself as a “prisoner of war” and has maintained a low public profile since his court appearance in New York on 5 January 2026.

In the statement, Maduro also praised the Venezuelan people for their resilience:

“We deeply appreciate our people’s ability to remain united, expressing love, consciousness, and solidarity even in difficult circumstances, whether inside or outside Venezuela.”

During a recent Friday hearing, the U.S. court rejected a defense motion seeking financial assistance from the government for Maduro and his wife’s legal expenses. Both defendants remained silent regarding the charges against them during the hearing.

Meanwhile, political developments continue to ripple internationally. Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Maduro was detained following U.S. military action in Venezuela, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two nations.

Maduro’s detention underscores broader international and humanitarian concerns about the treatment of high-profile political prisoners and access to legal resources. Observers note the tight controls, limited family access, and media restrictions as significant elements affecting the couple’s daily life in custody.

As Maduro and his wife navigate nearly three months of incarceration, their social media message serves both as a personal statement of resilience and faith and a reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding Venezuela and U.S. foreign policy.
