No, Netflix Has Not Released a Documentary on Imran Khan – Viral Claim Debunked

Islamabad, Pakistan — A viral video circulating across Pakistani social media platforms falsely claims that streaming giant Netflix has released a documentary on former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The claim, widely shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter, has been debunked by fact-checking initiative iVerify Pakistan.

The misleading video features Netflix branding and titles such as “Behind Closed Doors: The Untold Story of Imran Khan”—a fabrication with no trace on Netflix’s official platform or press releases. Despite its slick presentation and widespread circulation, no such documentary exists in the Netflix catalogue.

According to iVerify Pakistan—an independent fact-checking initiative supported by the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) and UNDP—the video is a piece of disinformation. “There is no evidence to support the claim that Netflix has released or is planning to release a documentary on Imran Khan,” said the organization in a statement.

This is not the first instance of politically motivated misinformation in Pakistan. In 2022, a similar fake documentary titled “Behind Closed Doors” falsely claimed to expose the financial dealings of the Sharif family and other political figures. That too was wrongly attributed to Netflix and later proven to be the work of a private production company unaffiliated with any global streaming platform.

Why It Matters

The claim comes at a politically sensitive time in Pakistan, where Imran Khan remains a polarizing figure following his ouster from office in April 2022 and subsequent legal battles. Misinformation campaigns like these often aim to manipulate public sentiment or portray international recognition of a political narrative that doesn’t exist.

Netflix has not made any statements or announcements regarding such content, and searches through its global catalogue show no result matching the alleged documentary. Misusing a trusted global brand like Netflix to lend credibility to political content can not only mislead audiences but also undermine trust in legitimate journalism and verified content platforms.

Social media users are urged to verify sensational claims before sharing and to rely on credible sources for information. The false Netflix documentary claim is part of a growing pattern of digital disinformation in South Asia that exploits political divisions and viral content strategies to influence public opinion.

For now, no such documentary on Imran Khan exists on Netflix or any other verified international streaming platform.
