UN Rights Chief Condemns Israel-Iran Escalation, Slams Gaza War Crimes

Date:

Geneva, Switzerland – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has issued a stern warning over the recent military escalation between Israel and Iran, urging both nations to pursue urgent diplomatic negotiations to prevent further violence.

Speaking at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk expressed deep concern over the exchange of attacks, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to international law.

“Deeply Worrying” Israel-Iran Conflict

“The military escalation between Israel and Iran is deeply worrying,” Turk said. “I call on both sides to engage in urgent diplomatic negotiations to end these attacks and find a way forward.”

He stressed the importance of protecting civilians, particularly in densely populated areas, as hostilities risk spiraling into a wider regional conflict.

“Unconscionable Suffering” in Gaza

Turk also delivered a scathing condemnation of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, accusing it of inflicting “horrifying, unconscionable suffering” on Palestinians.

“Israel’s means and methods of warfare have led to catastrophic humanitarian consequences,” he said. “The blockade and weaponization of food have exacerbated starvation, with lifesaving aid deliberately obstructed.”

He called for immediate and impartial investigations into Israeli attacks on civilians, including recent deadly strikes near food distribution centers where desperate Palestinians were gathering for aid.

“Dehumanizing Rhetoric” Echoes Genocidal Language

The UN rights chief also took aim at senior Israeli officials for their inflammatory rhetoric, warning that their statements resemble language used before the “gravest of crimes.”

“Disturbing, dehumanizing rhetoric from Israeli government officials is reminiscent of historical precedents that led to atrocities,” Turk said, without explicitly naming specific leaders.

Global Call for Accountability

Turk’s remarks come as international pressure mounts on Israel over its conduct in Gaza, where over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. The UN and human rights groups have repeatedly accused Israel of war crimes, including indiscriminate bombing, forced starvation, and attacks on medical facilities.

Meanwhile, the recent tit-for-tat strikes between Israel and Iran have raised fears of a broader Middle East war, with global leaders urging restraint.
