Students Protest Against Fee Hike at University of Kashmir, Clash with Police; Several Injured

Muzaffarabad, March 7, 2025 – Students at the University of Kashmir staged a protest against a recent fee hike, leading to violent clashes with police at the university’s main gate. The confrontation resulted in multiple injuries as police resorted to baton charges and tear gas shelling to disperse the demonstrators. Female students and university staff were reportedly trapped inside the building during the chaos.

According to reports from Domail Digital, the protest began when students gathered to oppose the fee increase. Tensions escalated at the university’s central gate, where students and police clashed. Protesters allegedly threw stones at the police, who responded with baton charges and tear gas, leaving several students injured. Some students were also arrested during the crackdown.

The students had blocked the university gate as part of their protest against the fee hike. However, the university administration called in the police, who detained several protesters. The main gate of the university turned into a battleground as the situation spiraled out of control. The protest was sparked two days earlier when students were reportedly pressured over fee-related issues, prompting them to take to the streets.

The protesting students condemned the university administration for calling in the police and allowing violence against them, calling it “unacceptable under any circumstances.” They demanded an immediate rollback of the fee hike and accountability for the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with concerns rising over the handling of student protests and the broader issue of rising educational costs in the region. Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
