At least one person was killed and several others injured in an outbreak of violence on Friday during the 8th Muharram procession in the Chamugarh area of Gilgit, a city in Pakistan-administered Kashmir’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The violence reportedly erupted due to a dispute over the procession’s route.
Eyewitnesses reported that participants returning from a Muharram procession in Maqpoondas were blocked in Chamugarh, leading to stone pelting and the exchange of gunfire. According to official sources, one person died, while three others — including a police constable — sustained gunshot wounds. Several more were injured in the ensuing chaos.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range), Raja Mirza Hassan, confirmed the fatality and described the situation in the area as “tense.” The injured were shifted to the Provincial Headquarters Hospital, where the constable was among those receiving treatment.
