Significant Reduction in Fire Incidents Across Jammu Kashmir

0

Azadi Times: Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), announced that there has been a notable 31 percent decrease in fire incidents in Jammu Kashmir this year.

He reported that compared to 59,000 fire incidents last year, J&K has seen only 4,000 incidents this year, marking a substantial reduction over the past year, specifically from August 2022 to July 2023.

Kumar attributed this decline to the successful organization of 28,000 fire awareness events conducted by F&ES across various locations in J&K. Notably, over three lakh people have been trained in fire awareness through these events.

Kumar also revealed the F&ES’s future plans, including the intention to equip every household with a fire extinguisher, enabling residents to respond swiftly to fires until professional firefighters arrive. Training programs are ongoing, even involving Class 10th students to enhance fire response skills.

Additionally, ADGP F&ES emphasized that prompt first aid would be provided to anyone injured during a fire incident, ensuring that lives are safeguarded until they receive advanced medical treatment at the hospital.

These measures reflect F&ES’s commitment to reducing fire incidents and preventing loss of life, as reported by Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

Sehnsa, Azad Kashmir (Azadi Times): In a powerful convergence of voices, Kashmiri students have come together to express their support for the ongoing freedom movement and demand accountability for the neglected infrastructure in Girls Degree College, Sahnsa.

The recent protest, which resonates with the larger pro-freedom political movement in Azad Kashmir, highlights the students’ unwavering commitment to the cause of self-determination and their determination to overcome the challenges faced in their pursuit of education.

The absence of a functional transformer in Girls Degree College has not only disrupted lectures in the laboratories but has also become a symbol of the systematic neglect faced by educational institutions in the region. Faced with low voltage and substandard facilities, the students have taken a stand against the oppressive conditions that hinder their educational progress.

The protest, organized by the students, gained traction as they blocked Sahnsa Badli Road near JS Bank Road, causing a significant disruption to the local traffic. Assistant Commissioner Sahnsa, Yaser Mahmood Chaudhry, Tehsildar Muhammad Ishaq, and Chairman of Municipal Committee Sahnsa, Raja Shakil Zia, engaged in negotiations with the students, recognizing the validity of their demands and the urgency for immediate action.

The students found solace in the assurance provided by Akhlaq, and as a result, temporarily halted their protest.

However, the students have set a ten-day deadline for the Sahnsa administration to fulfill its promises, particularly in providing a functioning transformer to Girls Degree College. This united front of Kashmiri students, aligned with the pro-freedom political party, sends a resounding message of solidarity, resilience, and determination in the face of systemic neglect and oppression.

The protest in Sehnsa serves as a poignant reminder of the larger struggle for self-determination and freedom in Azad Kashmir. The students’ demand for accountability and improved infrastructure resonates with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, who have long yearned for justice, equality, and the right to determine their own destiny.

As the deadline approaches, the Sahnsa administration finds itself under scrutiny, as the students remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and a better future. The protest not only highlights the pressing issues within the education system but also emphasizes the need for broader reforms that address the fundamental rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Corruption Scandal Rocks Livestock Sector in AJK: AJK Livestock Department Under Scrutiny

    0

Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir – In a shocking revelation, the livestock sector in Muzaffarabad, the capital city of Azad Kashmir, has been hit by a corruption scandal. Azadi Times reported on Thursday.

The Livestock Department, entrusted with the responsibility of promoting agriculture and ensuring the welfare of farmers, has been marred by widespread corruption, particularly in the poultry sector. For the past five years, the department’s plan to provide chickens to the public has remained nothing more than a mere formality.

Investigations have uncovered a web of deceit and manipulation, as fake production figures were created to mislead authorities and the public alike. Startlingly, it has been discovered that around 70% of officials within the Livestock and Poultry Development department maintain their own private veterinary stores and poultry farms. Even though they lack their own farms, these officials have managed to secure contracts with private farm owners, further exacerbating the corrupt practices.

The Azad Kashmir Livestock Department, originally envisioned to foster the production of milk, meat, and eggs, has failed spectacularly in fulfilling its core objectives. The recent poultry sector corruption scandal has shed light on the magnitude of the problem. Under the department’s supervision in Muzaffarabad district, the data provided for the distribution of chickens to the public from a single poultry farm has been proven to be fictitious. Investigations have also revealed the inclusion of fabricated names and telephone numbers in the records.

Moreover, it has come to light that department officials have established their own private poultry stores, where they sell medicines and feed for the chickens purportedly being raised on the government farm. Even more alarming is the revelation of a contract between the officials and private farm owners for the disposal of farm waste.

These disposal farms clandestinely operate as outlets for the sale of feed, chickens, and medicines during nighttime. To cut costs and maximize profits, officials have been found to sell only one-day-old chicks to farmers. Unfortunately, due to the lack of proper care, feed, vaccines, and field expenses, these chicks often succumb to premature death within days.

Despite the gravity of the corruption scandal, no significant investigations have been conducted thus far. It is believed that the owners of the disposal poultry farms exert influence over the officials and hinder any attempts to uncover the truth.

Local landlords and farmers have expressed their frustration and called upon the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir and the Chief Secretary to intervene. They have urged for thorough physical verification of department records, an investigation into the personal poultry stores and farms of the officials, and swift action against those responsible.

They emphasize the importance of publicly presenting the true facts to restore trust and transparency. Furthermore, it has been observed that a substantial budget allocated to the livestock sector continues to be siphoned off into the pockets of corrupt officials in the form of bribes, further exacerbating the plight of farmers and the agricultural industry.

In light of these shocking revelations, it is imperative for the concerned authorities to take swift action against the perpetrators of this corruption scandal. Restoring integrity and accountability within the Livestock Department is crucial to ensure the welfare of farmers and the growth of the agriculture sector in Azad Kashmir.

Indian SC Grapples with Central Government’s Article 370 Claims in Ongoing Legal Battle

    0

Byline: Azadi Times – Only Independent News Source of J&K: In a pivotal juncture in the relentless legal struggle revolving around the annulment of Article 370, the Central Government, on the 13th day of hearings, presented its case before the Supreme Court.

The government’s arguments sought to shed light on the developmental activities initiated in Jammu and Kashmir since the contentious move on August 5, 2019.

Representing the Central Government, the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, delivered a powerful presentation, spotlighting the positive transformations witnessed in the region.

Mehta revealed a remarkable statistic: in 2022, an astounding 1.88 crores of tourists graced the region, symbolizing a remarkable resurgence in the tourism sector, which serves as a vital economic lifeline.

He went on to state, “Many new industries are also making their way to Jammu Kashmir,” hinting at diversification efforts to bolster the local economy.

Mehta emphasized that effective governance extends beyond mere law enforcement. He disclosed, “Out of 53 projects under the Prime Minister’s development package, valued at 58477 crores, a significant 32 have already been successfully completed.” These projects are envisioned to fortify infrastructure and catalyze economic growth in the region.

Regarding the restoration of statehood, the Central Government refrained from providing a specific timeline but assured its preparedness for regional elections. Mehta affirmed, “The government stands ready for elections. The decision rests with the Election Commission of India and the Election Commission of Jammu Kashmir. Voter list updates are complete, and any pending work is actively underway.”

During the proceedings, Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioners challenging the Article 370 abrogation, passionately sought recognition from the judges regarding the development-centric facts presented. He passionately argued, “This is relevant from our standpoint. Your Lordships have previously stated that subsequent facts should be taken into account.”

Responding to the Central Government’s assertion that there were no shutdowns in the Kashmir valley post Article 370’s abrogation, Advocate Sibal countered the claim. He asserted, “When you have 5,000 people under house arrest and a blanket curfew affecting 144 throughout the state, there can be no bandh! My plea is to refrain from entering this arena, as we would have to counter it with an array of facts.”

In response, the Chief Justice of India reminded all parties involved that the developmental activities cited by the Government may not be directly germane to the constitutional challenge at hand. The Court underscored the imperative of addressing the constitutional challenge autonomously.

As the legal confrontation unfolds in the Supreme Court, the future of Jammu and Kashmir remains a topic of intense scrutiny and passionate debate. The region’s development, statehood restoration, and electoral prospects continue to dominate the discourse in this high-stakes legal contest.

Relief for Affected Residents as Compensation Process Commences

After a gap of around 10 years, the 600-plus aggrieved families in Budgam district are supposed to get compensation for their 4000 Kanals of land which was acquired by the Defence Estates Department at Srinagar Old Airfield area ( Estate Karewa Damodar) in 2013.

The aggrieved land owners and farmers have been waiting for the payment since then. Part of the payment Rs 4.80 lakhs per kanal was already paid to each family but the rates were enhanced to Rs 18 to 20 lakhs per kanal and said payment was not disbursed to the families.

A delegation of aggrieved landowners of estate Karewa Damodar (Old Airfield) Srinagar led by social activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat had a detailed meeting with senior officers in DG Defence Estates Office in New Delhi on Monday.

In a statement the Zamidaran Committee Karewa Damodar said that meeting was a great as the senior officers of DG Defence Estates Office in New Delhi said that payment to the tune of more than 600 Crore had been sanctioned by Govt of India and would be disbursed to the land owners through Defence Estates Officer Srinagar and Deputy Commissioner Budgam.

Pertinently the land owners of Karewa Damodar (Old Airport) along with some prominent social activists had met with GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen ADC Aujla in Srinagar last year and apprised him about the problems faced by affected families whose land has been acquired by Defence Estates Department at old airfield but payment wasn’t being released.

“The previous GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen ADS Aujla had taken our issue seriously and since then he had been making communication with the Defence Estates Department. Even after this transfer from Srinagar he facilitated the meeting with the top officers in DG Defence Estates Department and we are fully hopeful that payment would be made to the aggrieved land owners. I am personally thankful to Lt Gen Aujla and DG Defence Estates G S Rajeshwaran for their support. I request now DC Budgam and Defence Estates Officer Srinagar to expedite our case ” said Dr Raja Muzaffar

Pertinently land measuring around 3879 kanals of land located around which belongs to around 600 plus families of Wathoora , Kralpora , Buchroo , Rangreth and many other adjoining areas of Budgam district.

The affected families have been waiting for compensation for the last 10 years as their land was acquired by the Defence Estates Department in 2012. Prior to 2013 the land owners were paid annual rent by the Army through the Defense Estates Department from 1957. In 2012 Govt decided to acquire the said land which is already in possession of the Army.
