Kashmir Authorities Impose Strict Curbs Amid Protests Over Iranian Supreme Leader’s Death

Date:

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir – Following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, authorities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir have imposed strict curfew-like restrictions across the valley to preempt possible protests. Security officials described the move as necessary to maintain public safety and law and order.

According to local authorities, all routes leading to the central commercial hub of Lal Chowk were blocked late in the evening using barbed wires, metal sheets, and heavy barricades. Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, and surveillance around the Ghanta Ghar area has been intensified.

Movement Restricted

Residents and commuters have experienced limited pedestrian and vehicular movement, with rigorous checks at all entry points. The administration emphasized that the restrictions would continue throughout the next day to prevent potential unrest.

A senior government official told UNI:

“Given the risk of large-scale protests, immediate measures were essential to ensure the safety of citizens and protection of property. Our top priority remains maintaining peace and law and order.”

Security Measures and Local Response

Local sources noted the visible presence of security forces in Srinagar, including strategic checkpoints and temporary closures of streets leading to major marketplaces. While residents have expressed understanding of the precautionary measures, some voiced concerns over disruptions to daily activities.

Authorities have also urged the public to comply with the directives and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The crackdown comes at a sensitive period in regional politics, reflecting the administration’s cautious approach toward potential public demonstrations following international events. Analysts point out that while the curbs are temporary, they highlight the valley’s vulnerability to sudden protests sparked by global incidents.

For businesses and daily commuters, the restrictions have temporarily affected operations, but officials maintain that these measures are proportionate and targeted.

The administration has confirmed that the curbs are expected to remain in place through the following day, with authorities monitoring the situation continuously. Security forces are prepared to adapt the measures depending on public response and any emerging risks.
