Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s administration fulfills its budget commitment, extending free travel to JKRTC services and smart e-buses across Jammu and Kashmir.
SRINAGAR — Fulfilling a budget announcement made in March, the Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has formally approved free public transport travel for persons with disabilities across the region.
The welfare measure applies to services operated by the Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC). In addition, the initiative covers electric buses managed by Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited, integrating urban transit networks into the newly approved scheme.
Extending congratulations to Transport Minister Satish Sharma for the rollout, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to social justice. He noted that the policy represents a significant step toward ensuring greater accessibility, ease of travel, and inclusive mobility throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
The government aims to make public transport more accessible while easing daily movement for differently-abled residents. Officials emphasized that the administration seeks to ensure equal access to essential services for all segments of society, preventing citizens from facing transit-related disadvantages.
