UN Urges Maximum Restraint Between Pakistan and India Amid Kashmir Tensions

Date:

Muzaffarabad, AJK (Indian administered Kashmir): United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Pakistan and India to exercise “maximum restraint” and de-escalate tensions following renewed hostilities along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed “deep concern” over the volatile situation, emphasizing that “any issue between India and Pakistan should be resolved peacefully through meaningful mutual engagement.” While the Secretary-General has not directly engaged with either government in the past 24 hours, the UN chief is “closely monitoring developments,” Dujarric confirmed during a press briefing.

The UN’s plea follows Thursday’s condemnation of a recent militant attack in Pahalgam, with Guterres reiterating that both nations must “ensure the situation does not deteriorate further.”

US Monitors Situation, Avoids Mediation Role

Across the Atlantic, the U.S. State Department addressed the rising tensions during a press briefing. When questioned about Washington’s stance on Kashmir and whether it holds Pakistan responsible for recent militant attacks in Indian-administered territory, spokesperson Tammy Bruce reiterated the U.S. position: “We stand with India in the fight against terrorism and unequivocally condemn all terrorist acts.”

Bruce confirmed the U.S. is “closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation” but declined to comment on Kashmir’s political status or potential mediation efforts. When pressed about former President Donald Trump’s past offers to mediate between the two nuclear-armed rivals, Bruce stated, “I won’t speculate… The President and Secretary have made their positions clear.”

Civilian Lives Disrupted, Calls for Ceasefire

Residents on both sides of the LoC reported sleepless nights as heavy artillery and mortar fire echoed through border villages. “Our children haven’t slept in days. This cycle of violence only brings suffering,” said a resident near the Kayani sector, where schools and markets remain shuttered due to safety concerns. Local communities have demanded an immediate ceasefire, criticizing both armies for violating the 2003 truce.

Historical Context and Lingering Disputes

The Lije of Control skirmish revives tensions in a region that has simmered since India’s 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s semi-autonomous status. The UN and international actors have repeatedly urged dialogue to address the decades-long dispute, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless families.

While casualties from the latest exchange remain unconfirmed, independent sources report heightened military mobilization along the LoC. Neither New Delhi nor Islamabad has issued formal statements on the incident, though both sides routinely accuse each other of initiating hostilities.
