Bangladesh Court Orders Confiscation of Sheikh Hasina’s Family Assets and Bank Accounts

Date:

Dhaka, March 13, 2025: A court in Dhaka has ordered the confiscation of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family assets and bank accounts, further intensifying the political turmoil surrounding her exile.

According to reports from Indian media, the Dhaka court directed authorities to seize properties owned by Hasina’s family, including her residence in the Dhanmondi area, known as Sudha Sadan. The court has also ordered the freezing of 124 bank accounts linked to her family members.

The ruling was issued by Senior Special Judge Zakir Hussain Ghalib of Dhaka Metropolitan Court following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Officials have confirmed that the assets of Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and her nieces Tulip Siddiq and Rizwan Mujib Siddiq have also been confiscated.

The name Sudha Sadan originates from Sheikh Hasina’s late husband, nuclear scientist M.A. Wazed Miah, who was often referred to as Sudha Miah.

Diplomatic Tensions Between Bangladesh and India

In a separate development, tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi have escalated over Sheikh Hasina’s controversial statements. On February 6, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a formal protest with the Indian government, condemning what it described as Hasina’s “false and fabricated remarks” on social media and other platforms.

On Thursday, the Bangladeshi government handed over a diplomatic note to India’s Acting High Commissioner in Dhaka, expressing its deep concern, disappointment, and strong disapproval over the remarks. The government argued that such statements were aimed at destabilizing the country and causing distress among its citizens.

Sheikh Hasina’s Exile and Political Fallout

Sheikh Hasina, who led Bangladesh for over two decades, fled the country last year following mass protests against her government. The 77-year-old leader sought refuge in India as opposition movements intensified against her rule.

After her departure, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge of an interim government, overseeing the country’s transition during a period of political and economic uncertainty.

This latest court order marks another chapter in Bangladesh’s shifting political landscape, with authorities continuing to pursue legal actions against the former prime minister and her close associates.
