With more than 500 seats left unfilled across 22 approved private institutions, Jammu University has extended the admission portal to meet regulatory standards.
JAMMU — Jammu University has reopened its admission process for private Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) colleges after hundreds of seats remained vacant, reflecting a declining student interest in the professional degree program.
According to university officials, approximately 500 seats across 22 approved private colleges remained unfilled this academic year, prompting authorities to reopen the online application portal until September 20.
The decline follows stricter regulatory oversight. More than 40 private B.Ed colleges across the Jammu division were denied admission permissions this year after failing to meet the mandatory standards set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Out of the permitted institutions, only about 1,000 seats were filled out of the allocated capacity.
Under the revised schedule issued by the university’s Directorate of Colleges Development Council, the merit list will be published on September 22. Physical document verification is scheduled for September 24 and 25, with selected candidates required to deposit their fees by September 26.
The landscape of higher education in the region has shifted significantly in recent years. Six years ago, Jammu University was affiliated with 72 B.Ed colleges. However, following the constitutional changes of August 2019 and the revocation of Article 370, NCTE regulations were formally extended to Jammu and Kashmir, ending previous regional exemptions.
Subsequent institutional inspections led authorities to reduce the overall intake capacity and bar non-compliant institutions from conducting admissions.
Dr. Dharmendra Mangotra, Director of the College Development Council, stated that affected institutions have been directed to fulfill all regulatory requirements. He added that the secondary admission round was initiated to accommodate eligible candidates against the remaining vacant slots.
