Beyond Cricket Diplomacy: The Unsettling Reality of Kashmir

Date:

Mirpur, Azad Kashmir: The recent visit of Indian Cricket Board Vice President Rajiv Shukla to Lahore has sparked considerable commentary from political groups in Jammu and Kashmir. Shukla’s attendance at the Pakistan semi-final match, as a guest of Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, has been hailed by some as a sign of improving relations between India and Pakistan.

However, this gesture of cricket diplomacy often obscures the harsh realities faced by the people of Kashmir. While political figures on both sides exchange pleasantries, Kashmiris continue to endure severe restrictions on their movement and communication. The Line of Control remains firmly sealed, effectively dividing families and communities.

What does this tell us about our commitment to justice and humanity? Shouldn’t the focus be on ensuring that Kashmiris have the same rights and freedoms as others? The fact that cricket diplomacy can unite leaders, while ordinary Kashmiris remain divided, underscores the significant challenges that lie ahead.
