An alarming incident occurred recently at the Bararkot Entry Point, a key road connection between Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, where a traffic police officer from Hazara reportedly assaulted a Kashmiri family. The victim, Khursheed Ahmad Bande, a resident of Muzaffarabad, was traveling with his family to the Hazara region. According to reports, when the family was stopped by traffic police for routine checks, an altercation ensued over Khursheed’s political stance regarding the sovereignty and independence of Jammu Kashmir.

Details of the Incident

Khursheed Ahmad Bande, traveling in a private vehicle with several women from his family, was fined Rs. 10,000 by the Hazara traffic police for allegedly expressing his views on Kashmir’s sovereignty, a stance that aligns with the belief in an independent Kashmir. This sudden fine appeared to be politically motivated, according to the family members.

When Khursheed’s sister attempted to defend her family, stating that the actions of the traffic police were wrong, she was reportedly slapped by a police officer. This action has led to strong condemnation from local Kashmiri groups, who have called for justice.

Family’s Response

Following the assault, Khursheed’s family has demanded an apology from the police officer involved, stating that the road will remain blocked until the officer apologizes publicly. They further emphasized that if the police officer does not apologize, the situation will escalate. The family has made it clear that the “slap” incident will not go unpunished, and they demand that the police officer be held accountable for his actions.

Broader Context: Peaceful Relations with Pakistan

Khursheed’s family expressed frustration over what they perceive as a violation of mutual respect between the people of Kashmir and Pakistan. They pointed out that vehicles carrying vegetables from Hazara to Muzaffarabad, Kashmir, regularly cross the Bararkot Entry Point without issues, and this is the first time such an incident has occurred.

“This attack on my sister and the fine on my family is a gross violation of our rights and dignity. We have had peaceful exchanges for years, and the police’s actions today are sending the wrong message,” said Khursheed Ahmad Bande.

Concerns of Escalating Tensions

The incident has raised concerns about escalating tensions between the people of Kashmir and Pakistan, especially regarding the perception of Kashmir’s sovereignty. If the matter is not addressed properly, it is feared that such incidents could spark further unrest, potentially affecting relations between the two communities.

Call for Investigation

Human rights activists and Kashmiri political leaders have called for an immediate investigation into the incident. They have urged the Pakistani authorities to ensure accountability and protect the rights of Kashmiri citizens, particularly when it comes to the expression of their political views.

Local sources have indicated that the road remains closed, with the family of Khursheed Ahmad Bande refusing to move until justice is served. The traffic officer involved in the incident reportedly fled the scene and has yet to face any disciplinary action.

International Reactions

This incident has caught the attention of international human rights organizations, who have condemned the assault as an infringement on the freedom of expression and human dignity. These groups are calling for a transparent investigation and for Pakistan to ensure that such actions do not undermine the peaceful exchange and cooperation between Kashmir and Pakistan.

As of now, the situation remains tense, with the road closure continuing, and there is a growing concern that if not handled carefully, this could escalate into a broader conflict
